TOEFL

TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language tests the English language ability of non-native speakers who wish to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.

The test measures how well a person uses Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills to perform academic tasks. The test is accepted by more than 7,500 colleges, universities, and agencies in more than 130 countries making it the most widely recognized English test in the world.

The format for the test has been changed three times. The first was the PBT (paper-based TOEFL test). It tests listening, reading and grammar skills with a perfect score being 677. Some centers where computers are not available still offer this format. The second format is the CBT (computer-based TOEFL test). People are each provided with a computer to take the test. A writing section was added along with the three sections. The level of listening and grammar skills are automatically changed depending on a person’s English level. The third change is the iBT (Internet-based test) that measures listening, speaking, reading and writing.

THERE ARE FEW PROCEDURES CANDIDATES FOLLOW WHEN TAKING THE TEST.

  1. 1. It is decided where and when the candidate is going to take the test because the format of the test could be either iBT or CBT depending on location. It is required that registration is done 2–3 months in advance to get a place.
  2. 2. Registration is done either in person, online, by phone, or through email. Online registration is most common and payment will be required to complete the registration. The cost changes depending on the exam that is being taken.

With more universities and colleges demanding a TOEFL score, the number of people enrolling for the test has increased. In 2010, nearly 115,000 people took the test in Korea to demonstrate their ability in English. This accounted for 20 percent of the total number of people taking the test. It is considered as crucial for middle or high school students to apply for the high ranking domestic universities. By studying at an advanced level, it could also help to improve the English skills and get high scores in other English exams.
