  1. 1Find the condition
  2. 2Keep it with the action
  3. 3Avoid a definite promise

A plan that applies only if a situation changes should not read like an unconditional booking. Removing the condition can materially alter the next step.

The first case in OET Writing Power Practice – Podiatry contains conditional follow-up recommendations. This guide focuses on the language of those conditions rather than clinical decision-making.

Read the whole plan

Identify the action and the circumstance that triggers it. Keep them connected when expanding notes into full sentences.

Original administrative example

Notes: If the file remains inaccessible, arrange a technical review.

Accurate: “A technical review should be arranged if the file remains inaccessible.”

Changed meaning: “A technical review has been arranged.”

Do not confuse a condition with a date

A review after a stated period may still depend on what happens during that period. Preserve both elements when both are supplied.

Which detail was lost?

Notes: Consider another practice session if difficulties continue after the initial review.

Draft: “Another session will follow the review.”

The draft removes both “consider” and “if difficulties continue,” turning a conditional possibility into a promise.

Check modal verbs as well

May, could, should and will convey different degrees of possibility or commitment. Choose the form that matches the source rather than one that sounds stronger.

Try writing a two-part summary of the current action and the conditional next step. Check that a reader can tell what is happening now and what depends on a future circumstance.
