Problem: writers use one generic essay shape for every question — discussions without balance, opinions without commitment, advantages listed without verdict. Answer in brief: three core types need three skeletons with distinct position logic: commit (opinion), balance-then-commit (discussion), weigh-and-verdict (advantage-disadvantage). This guide teaches all three with position drills, and IELTS Writing — Course 5 trains the three types across 12 topic sections.
Type 1: opinion essays that commit
Position in sentence one, two reasons with examples, restatement without new ideas. Commitment errors: fence-sitting conclusions (“both sides have merit” with no verdict), second reason contradicting the first, examples that illustrate the other side. Commit fully — partial agreement (“largely agree because…, although…”) is fine if the verdict is unmistakable.
Type 2: discussion essays that balance then commit
Side A paragraph argued fairly (steelman, never strawman), side B paragraph equally fairly, own position with the deciding reason. Balance errors: one side starved, own view leaking early, conclusion introducing new arguments. Fairness first persuades the examiner of range; the verdict then shows judgement.

Type 3: advantage-disadvantage essays that weigh
Real weighing, not parallel lists: advantages with significance, disadvantages with significance, verdict on which outweighs — with the weighing language explicit (“the decisive factor is…”, “these drawbacks are outweighed by…”). List-essays without verdicts answer half the question; the outweigh sentence is the whole type.
Position drill: 60-second stances
Ten questions, one minute each: state type, verdict and two reason-headlines aloud. Speed forces skeleton thinking — content follows positions, never precedes. Drill until classification is instant; exam planning then starts from structure, not panic.
FAQs
Is partial agreement safe?
Yes, when the verdict is clear: “largely agree, with one reservation” commits. “Both sides valid” without verdict does not — that is evasion, not balance.
How long per type in practice?
Opinion first (most frequent), then discussion, then advantage-disadvantage. Two weeks each with daily stances builds all three.
What is in the course?
Twelve topic sections on the three core essay types with position logic, 83 lessons and 5 complete mock tests.
