Problem: OET Reading is a paraphrase test wearing a comprehension disguise — answers hide behind synonyms, and unknown workplace terms block whole questions. Answer in brief: stock three banks (healthcare synonym pairs, Part A notice vocabulary, Part B workplace terms) and practise recognising rewording, not just words. This guide seeds all three banks with drills, and OET Reading — Course 4 provides full banks across 7 topic sections.
Bank 1: healthcare synonym and paraphrase pairs
Seed pairs (general technique, examples newly chosen): onset/beginning, exacerbation/worsening, administer/give, monitor/observe, deteriorate/decline, facilitate/enable, contraindicate/rule out, prognosis/outlook. Practice direction: question-word → text-word (the test paraphrases questions into text, so train recognition backwards from answer language to question language). Log every paraphrase met in practice; the bank compounds.
Bank 2: Part A notice vocabulary
Dosage (bd/tds/qds, prn, stat), thresholds (exceeding, below, within range), instructions (withhold, titrate, taper, escalate), warnings (contraindicated, caution, avoid in). Notice vocabulary is finite and high-frequency — a week of bank study covers most Part A texts. Abbreviations decoded once, known forever.

Bank 3: Part B workplace vocabulary
Handover verbs (escalate, chase, hand over), policy nouns (protocol, pathway, audit, incident), workplace adjectives (deteriorating, stable, non-compliant, fasted). Part B extracts assume workplace fluency — terms are never glossed, and one unknown term can sink a whole item. Bank study targets extracts specifically, not general English.
Paraphrase-recognition drill
Ten question-to-text pairs: read the question wording, predict three possible text paraphrases, then verify against the passage. Prediction trains the recognition direction the test uses. Score paraphrases found, not answers — recognition first, answering follows.
FAQs
How many pairs should I learn?
Two hundred core pairs cover most papers; log-and-review beats list-memorising. Quality (recognition speed) over quantity.
Will general vocabulary study help?
Marginally — OET paraphrases are healthcare-specific. General lists dilute effort; bank study concentrates it where the test lives.
What is in the course?
Seven topic sections with the synonym bank and Part A/Part B vocabulary banks, plus 5 complete mock tests.
The matching course
OET Reading — Course 4 stocks what the test hides behind: synonyms, notices, workplace terms — 7 topic sections with 5 mock tests. If rewording beats you, bank here.
