Guided to Independent to Mock: OET Practice Task Ladder

From Guided to Independent to Mock: The OET Practice Task Ladder

Problem: candidates jump from studying to mock exams with nothing in between — and the gap swallows them. Answer in brief: climb the ladder: 8 guided letters, 8 independent letters, then 4 timed mocks. Below: how each rung works, workspace discipline, demonstrations, eight tasks and FAQs — grounded in OET Writing Practice Tasks by Jobin Thomas.

Learning outcomes

By the end you will be able to: use guided tasks with scaffolding; graduate to independent timed writing; and sit full mocks under official timing. Ladder follows the source book.

The three-rung ladder

Guided → independent → mock mirrors how skills actually build: supported success first, then solo success, then success under pressure. Skipping rungs manufactures failure — mocks attempted before guided competence measure panic, not ability. The book’s rule is firm: keep the model book closed while writing; models are for after, not during.

Rung 1: guided letters (G01–G08)

Each task supplies fictional situation, recipient and numbered notes (study references only — never copy numbers as a list). Start untimed; write ~180–200 body words in complete letter form. Use the planning workspace beside each task. Compare with the model book afterwards for decisions, studying selection and arrangement — other effective arrangements exist where they fulfil the task accurately.

Rung 2: independent letters (I01–I08)

Same format, no scaffolding: build toward exam timing session by session. The independence test: can you plan, write and check without prompts? Note numbers remain study references; body counts use whitespace-separated words (hyphenated expressions count as one).

Rung 3: timed mocks (M01–M04)

Official rhythm: five minutes reading only (no writing or marking), then forty minutes for planning, writing and checking. Full letter form with salutation, subject, address and closing excluded from body counts. Mocks are sat, not studied — conditions sacred, analysis after.

Demonstrations (newly written)

Labelling: both demonstrations are newly written.

Ladder week (newly written)

Monday: G-task untimed with workspace planning. Wednesday: I-task at 80% time allowance. Saturday: full mock M-style, official timing. One ladder cycle per week; rungs never skipped even when confident.

Workspace discipline (newly written)

Plan box (reader/purpose/selection/order), draft zone, check boxes (purpose/content/clarity/genre/organisation/language). The workspace page is thinking space — use all of it before the letter.

One ladder week, fully worked (newly written)

Labelling: the illustration below is newly written. Monday (guided): wound-care discharge task attempted untimed with workspace planning; model compared for selection decisions — learned: tolerance outcomes travel, admission vitals don’t. Wednesday (independent): similar discharge task at 80% time; plan kept; body counted per book rules (187 words). Saturday (mock): full official timing, unfamiliar case; analysis shows purpose stated but request undated — next week’s ladder targets dated requests across all rungs. One week, three rungs, one fixed gap: the ladder working as designed.

Full worked consultation with commentary (newly written)

Labelling: the dialogue below is newly written (fictional scenario). Scenario gist: wound-care follow-up, patient omitting dressing changes. Guided phase: “Walk me through yesterday’s dressing change exactly — what did you do first? [scaffolded unpack] … The key point is that damp dressings breed infection; daily changes keep the wound edges pink and dry. [guided correction]” Independent phase: “…So: clean hands, saline rinse, fresh dressing mornings, photo diary — could you tell me Thursday’s routine back? [teach-back] … Come sooner for spreading redness, pus or fever. [safety]” Commentary: guided scaffolding early, independent performance late, mock pressure in between — the three-phase arc in one consultation.

Practice bank: 8 tasks with answers

Task 1. Attempt any G-task untimed with workspace. Answer guidance: plan kept, model book closed.

Task 2. Compare against the model for decisions. Answer guidance: selection + arrangement notes, not sentences copied.

Task 3. Re-attempt the same task at 80% time. Answer: independence measured.

Task 4. Body-count drill: count any letter per the book’s rules. Answer: whitespace words; salutation/subject/address/closing excluded.

Task 5. Numbers-to-prose: convert three numbered notes to a paragraph. Answer guidance: no list copying, complete sentences.

Task 6. Five-minute read-only rehearsal. Answer: plan formed without writing a word.

Task 7. Full mock under official timing. Answer: sat, then analysed.

Task 8. Ladder audit: which rung wobbles? Answer: weakest rung gets next week.

Common errors and corrections

Model-peeking. Opening the model book mid-task — closed until after. List copying. Numbered notes as letter body — prose only. Mock-skipping. Guided forever — graduate on schedule. Mock-studying. Pausing mocks mid-way — conditions sacred. Count ignorance. Never checking length — count per book rules.

Study sequence with the book

Weeks 1–2: G01–G08 with model comparison. Weeks 3–4: I01–I08 building to timing. Final fortnight: M01–M04 mocks with full analysis; ladder audits weekly.

FAQs

How many tasks per session? One well-analysed task beats three rushed ones. When to go timed? Rung 2 onwards, progressively. Are models “correct answers”? Possible answers, not scripts — other effective arrangements exist. What counts in body length? Whitespace-separated words; salutation, subject, address, closing excluded. What if mocks plateau? Descend one rung and rebuild — ladders work both directions.
