“I learned it online” identifies a resource but says little about the learning process. A stronger account explains what you could not do initially, how you practised and what changed.
The independent-learning cue card and model in IELTS Speaking Academic: 50 Cue Cards for Band 9 Success provide the theme for this original practice.
Choose a manageable skill
You could discuss organising a spreadsheet, preparing a presentation or learning a new recipe. Select something you can explain with a few specific actions. The activity does not need to be impressive to someone else.
Original story outline
Wanted to organise expenses → could not use formulas → followed one short demonstration → tried a small example → corrected a mistaken cell reference → made a working monthly total.
Explain the difficulty precisely
“It was hard” becomes more useful when you identify the obstacle. Was the instruction unclear, the sequence unfamiliar or practice inconsistent? Explain what you changed in response rather than listing unrelated problems.
Replace a vague result
Vague: “Then I became very good.”
Specific: “Eventually, I could enter new expenses and the total updated correctly without help.”
The second version gives a concrete sign of progress without claiming complete mastery.
Finish with a relevant reflection
Explain how the experience affected your next attempt at learning something. You might now check examples more carefully or practise in smaller steps. Avoid turning one success into a promise that anyone can achieve anything without support.
Record the account, then listen for the point where your method connects to the result. If that connection is missing, add the action that made the difference.
