A personal story and a general discussion need different kinds of development. When the question changes from your journey to why people travel, continuing the same itinerary may miss the new focus.

The first practice test in the source 50-ielts-speaking-bundle-for-9-band-practice.epub moves from a memorable journey to wider travel questions. This guide uses that shift as a practice exercise.

Listen for who the question concerns

“You” invites your own experience. “People” asks you to consider a broader pattern. Your experience can illustrate that pattern, but it does not establish what everyone does.

Original scope comparison

Personal: “I travelled to another town to attend a family celebration.”

Broader: “People may travel to maintain family relationships, especially when relatives live far apart.”

Use a personal example in the right role

You can add your family journey as an illustration of the broader point. Introduce the general reason first so the listener understands why the story is relevant.

Respond to the changed question

Question: Why might people prefer shorter trips?

Possible answer: “A shorter trip can be easier to fit around work or family commitments. For example, someone with only a weekend free may choose a nearby destination.”

This answers the general question. A detailed account of your last train journey would need an explicit connection to that reason.

Practise paired questions

Ask yourself what you enjoyed about a trip, then why people might enjoy similar experiences. Next, describe a difficulty you encountered and discuss a possible difficulty for travellers more generally.

Listen to the recording for changes in scope. Keep personal facts personal, and phrase broader ideas with the appropriate degree of certainty.
