  1. 1Choose a real example
  2. 2Explain your contribution
  3. 3Reflect on the result

A useful interview answer gives the panel evidence of how you think and act. A polished script is less helpful if it does not describe your own experience or answer the question asked.

The preparation sections in Get Hired: Community Nurse Interview Q&A (UK Edition) recommend structured examples and reflection. This guide focuses on answer organisation, not clinical protocols or registration requirements.

Use STAR as a planning structure

Briefly establish the situation and your task. Give most of the detail to your own actions, then explain the result. Be clear about what you did and what colleagues contributed.

Original non-clinical practice outline

Situation: A team learning session was repeatedly missed because it overlapped with handover.

Task: Help the organiser understand the scheduling problem.

Action: Gather availability, summarise the conflict and propose alternatives.

Result: State what actually happened after the proposal. Do not invent an attendance improvement.

Add reflection, not a perfect ending

Explain what worked, what remained difficult and what you would change. A limited result can still support a thoughtful answer when you describe it honestly.

Improve this vague claim

Draft: “I am an excellent communicator and solved everything.”

Better direction: Identify a specific communication action, the response it received and one lesson you took from it. Use your own example rather than adopting the illustrative scenario as personal experience.

Match the question and protect privacy

Choose an example relevant to the question and remove identifying details about other people. For clinical or professional-standard questions, prepare from current authoritative guidance and the employer's role information.

Practise a brief answer aloud. Ask a listener to identify your task, your contribution and your learning. If any of those are unclear, revise that part before adding more detail.
