The Five Recurring Part 1 Moves Every IELTS Answer Should Make

Problem: Part 1 answers feel random — some extended, some bare, no system deciding what each answer needs. Answer in brief: every strong Part 1 answer makes up to five recurring moves: direct answer, detail, reason, feeling, and forward glance — deployed to fit, not forced. Learn the moves, and short answers become systematic scoring. This guide teaches all five with the fit method, and IELTS Speaking — Course 11 drills them across 4 topic sections.

The five moves, defined

1. Direct: answer the question plainly first — examiners notice evasion instantly. 2. Detail: one concrete specification (numbers, names, descriptions). 3. Reason: why — because-clauses showing grammar range. 4. Feeling: your attitude — evaluative adjectives showing vocabulary. 5. Forward glance: a brief future note where natural (plans, hopes). Three to four moves per answer; all five where the question invites.

Fit, not force: choosing moves

“Do you like cooking?” fits direct + feeling + reason. “Where do you live?” fits direct + detail + forward glance. Forcing all five everywhere produces robotic answers; choosing three well produces natural ones. Practise move-selection explicitly: for twenty questions, name the intended moves before answering — selection itself is the trainable skill.

Moves drill

Daily ten questions: name moves, answer aloud, verify from recording (were the named moves audible?). Weekly: weakest move isolated — fifty rapid answers using predominantly that move. Two weeks installs selection; a month makes it conversational.

FAQs

How many moves per answer?

Three to four typically; two for simple questions answered crisply; five for rich questions that invite them. Natural fit over count.

Does every answer need a future glance?

No — only where the question invites plans or change. Forced glances sound scripted; omitted-where-fitting loses range. Fit decides.

What is in the course?

Four topic sections on the five recurring Part 1 moves, with lessons, quizzes and 5 complete mock tests.
