A list of numbers tells the reader what is in a chart. An overview tells the reader what matters most. Start by identifying the biggest patterns before deciding which figures belong in your detailed paragraphs.
Understand what the overview needs to do
IELTS Academic Task 1 asks you to describe visual information, such as a chart, table or diagram. The response must contain at least 150 words, with about 20 minutes available. The official IELTS Academic Writing format guide explains that organising an overview of the visual information is part of the task.
Your overview should summarise the most noticeable features. For a time-series chart, these might include the overall direction, the largest change or a reversal. For a process, the main features may be its broad stages, beginning and endpoint. Let the visual determine the content.
Look for relationships before individual figures
Consider this invented table. It shows the percentage of employees commuting by three methods in a fictional town. It is an original teaching example, not an official IELTS question.
| Method | 2015 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Car | 55% | 35% |
| Bus | 30% | 40% |
| Bicycle | 15% | 25% |
Before writing, notice three relationships: car use fell; both alternatives increased; buses overtook cars as the most common method. These observations tell a clearer story than treating every cell as a separate fact.
Build a concise overview
Original model overview
“Overall, the share of employees travelling by car declined, while bus and bicycle use increased. Buses became the most common commuting method by the end of the period, although cycling remained the least common.”
This is an overview only, not a complete Task 1 response. It gives the general directions and the change in ranking. The detailed paragraphs can then support those observations with selected figures and comparisons.
Do not add a cause that the table does not provide. “Cycling increased because the council built new cycle lanes” may be plausible, but the data shown here do not establish that explanation.
Avoid three common overview problems
- Describing the format instead of the pattern: “The table has three transport methods and two years” identifies the display, but does not summarise its findings.
- Making every movement equally important: identify the main contrasts first, then select details that support them.
- Using stronger language than the evidence supports: “almost disappeared” would be inaccurate for a fall from 55% to 35%.
Check the units as carefully as the trend. In this example, the table reports proportions of employees, not the total number of journeys. Your nouns and comparisons need to preserve that meaning.
Write your own overview before revealing ours
In another fictional dataset, library membership rises from 1,200 to 1,800 in District A and from 800 to 1,600 in District B. Write an overview comparing the general change and the relative positions of the two districts.
Reveal an example and explanation
“Overall, library membership increased in both districts. District A continued to have more members, although the gap between the two districts narrowed considerably.”
The example identifies the shared direction and the narrowing gap. The figures belong in the supporting description. District B doubled its membership, but did not overtake District A.
Before you finish, check that every statement is supported by the visual. Then move from overview practice to complete timed responses, leaving room to review accuracy. For essay development, see our guide to building a focused Task 2 paragraph.
