IELTS General Training Writing: Agree-Disagree, Advantages, Solutions

Problem: General Training candidates prepare Academic-style arguments — then meet letter-writing plus simpler essays with different expectations. Answer in brief: GT Task 2 centres on three types (agree/disagree, advantage/disadvantage, solutions), each with everyday topics and clear position logic; Task 1 letters need tone-matched function. This guide teaches the three types, and IELTS General Training — Course 1 trains GT writing across 13 topic sections.

What General Training changes

Topics turn everyday (housing, transport, work, community, family) and Task 1 becomes letter writing (formal, semi-formal, informal). Essays stay 250+ words with the same four criteria — but examples come from daily life, not academia, and tone judgement in letters joins the tested skills. Prepare GT as its own test, not Academic-lite.

Agree/disagree: everyday positions

Position with lived reasons: “Working from home suits parents because…” with concrete detail (school runs, saved fares). Everyday topics reward specific examples over abstract claims — the examiner wants to see your world, not philosophy. Partial agreement works when the verdict is unmistakable.

Advantage/disadvantage: practical weighing

Weigh lived trade-offs (remote work: saved commute vs isolation) with a verdict that chooses. Practical weighing beats theoretical balance: name who gains, who loses, and whether the gain outweighs for most people. The outweigh sentence carries the type.

Solution essays: problems solved, not discussed

Realistic, matched solutions: one solution per stated problem, each feasible (“councils could fund…”, “employers might offer…”). Vague solutions (“government should solve it”) fail; specified actors with specified actions score. Evaluate briefly — which solution matters most and why.

Task 1 letters: function and tone

Complaint, request, application, apology, invitation — each with its function (what must the letter achieve?) and tone (formal “I am writing to…”, semi-formal neighbourly, informal warm). Bullet-pointed prompts must ALL be covered — missed bullets cap achievement directly. Open with purpose, close with action.

FAQs

Is GT easier than Academic?

Different, not easier: everyday topics help ideas, but letters add tone judgement Academic writers never face. Prepare both tasks as tested skills.

Can Academic preparation transfer?

Essay skeletons transfer fully; examples need re-grounding in daily life; letters need fresh study. Roughly half transfers — train the rest specifically.
