Skim First, Match Second: Speed Reading for IELTS Information Tasks

Problem: slow readers read everything twice — once to understand, once to answer — and run out of time at Passage 3. Answer in brief: skim for structure first (2–3 minutes per passage), then match information by searching, never by re-reading. This guide teaches skim-then-search with a timed routine, and IELTS Reading — Course 3 trains skimming and matching across 21 topic sections.

Skimming for main ideas (not speed-reading myths)

Real skimming: first sentences of each paragraph, last paragraph fully, headings and visuals noted — producing a paragraph-job map in 2–3 minutes. Not speed-reading (which sacrifices comprehension), but strategic sampling: jobs located, details deliberately skipped. The map then routes every question — matching items go straight to candidate paragraphs without re-reading.

Matching information to paragraphs

Each statement hides key nouns; paraphrase them mentally (cause → factor, increase → rise), then consult the skim map for candidate paragraphs and verify by scanning. Verify means pointed evidence — one clause supporting the match. Common trap: two paragraphs share vocabulary; the map’s job-notes (not word-matches) break ties.

The 20-minute passage routine

Minutes 0–3: skim-map. Minutes 3–15: answer in paper order, searching per question. Minutes 15–18: hard items revisited with remaining time. Minutes 18–20: guesses for blanks (never leave any) plus transfer check. The routine prevents the classic failure: 25 perfect minutes on Passage 1, panic thereafter.

Worked skim: 3-minute map

Fictional passage, newly described (six paragraphs on urban farming): P1 problem (food miles), P2 method (rooftop systems), P3 economics (costs vs savings), P4 social effects, P5 criticisms, P6 outlook. Map notes: “P1 problem, P2 method, P3 money, P4 people, P5 critics, P6 future.” Six jobs, thirty words — every matching item now routes in seconds.

FAQs

How do I skim without missing answers?

Skimming locates; scanning verifies. Missing happens only when readers answer from the skim — always verify by pointed re-reading of the candidate lines.

What if I am naturally slow?

Slow accurate beats fast sloppy only if finished: practise the routine under time until Passage 3 gets its full share. Speed follows structure, not rushing.

What is in the course?
