Problem: Parts 2 and 3 get practised as strangers — cards drilled alone, discussions attempted cold — though the test joins them by theme. Answer in brief: practise cue cards and discussion together in depth: each card’s ideas, vocabulary and stance feed its linked discussion, and depth moves (reasons, concessions, speculation) get drilled on familiar content first. This guide teaches paired in-depth practice, and IELTS Speaking — Course 12 trains both parts across 17 topic sections.
Cue-card practice: skeleton to story
Per card: keyword skeleton in one minute, two-minute recorded talk, beat check. Depth in Part 2 means developed beats — each bullet expanded with detail or incident, never merely named. Practise until skeletons generate stories automatically; the card’s bullets are prompts, and prompts demand development.
Discussion practice: depth moves
Part 3 depth moves: give reasons, concede and counter, compare groups and eras, speculate futures, evaluate policies. Drill each move on familiar content (your own card topics) before unfamiliar abstracts — moves learned on easy material transfer to hard questions. Record and count moves per answer; uncounted depth is unpractised depth.

In depth: pairing method
Each session: one card (skeleton, talk, check) then its linked discussion set (answers deploying two named depth moves reusing card vocabulary). The card warms the theme; the discussion deepens it — exactly the test’s design. Paired sessions mirror exam cognition; isolated drills do not.
Paired practice plan
Three paired sessions weekly across ten weeks: thirty cards with thirty linked discussions. Weekly full mock from paired material. Depth measured in moves per answer — watch the count rise.
FAQs
Can I repeat Part 2 ideas in Part 3?
Reuse vocabulary and stance, but elevate: Part 3 wants generalisation and abstraction, not repetition. Same theme, higher altitude.
What if Part 3 questions confuse me?
Clarify briefly, then answer a clear interpretation confidently — examiners score the language that follows, not the clarification.
