OET Grammar Repair Clinic: Sentence Accuracy and Final Review

Problem: writers “revise grammar” by re-reading rules — then reproduce the same faults under time. Answer in brief: repair works sentence-first (diagnose, fix, rewrite, re-test), accuracy locks through personal fault lists, and final review rehearses the exam routine. This guide teaches the repair loop with a faulty-paragraph clinic, and OET Grammar — Course 3 provides repair, accuracy and review training with mock tests.

The repair loop: diagnose, fix, rewrite, re-test

Take one faulty sentence. Diagnose in grammatical terms (“past-tense finding that should be present”). Fix minimally — change the fault, nothing else. Rewrite the whole sentence cleanly. Re-test blind tomorrow: same fault type, new sentence. Four steps, five minutes per fault, faults never return. Rule-reading skips steps 1 and 4 — which is why rule-readers keep their faults.

Faulty-paragraph clinic (worked)

Fictional faulty paragraph, newly written: “Mr Silva was comfortable today. He undergoes surgery last week. Wound is healed. He will discharged Friday.” Diagnoses: past-tense today (“was comfortable”); present-tense history (“undergoes… last week”); article slip (“Wound is”); future without verb (“will discharged”). Repaired: “Mr Silva is comfortable today. He underwent surgery last week. The wound is healed. He will be discharged on Friday.” Four faults, four minimal fixes — the loop demonstrated end to end.

Sentence accuracy habits

Keep a personal fault log with tallies — the three most frequent faults earn a pre-draft reminder (“today=present; agents on passives; articles on wounds”) read before every timed letter. Accuracy is a checklist, not a talent: writers with logs improve faster than writers with textbooks because logs target the actual faults, not the syllabus.

Final review routine

Exam-minus-seven-days: one timed mock per day with full repair loops on every fault found. Exam-minus-one: light accuracy drills only, no new material. Exam morning: the personal checklist read once. Final review rehearses routine, not knowledge — calm procedures beat crammed rules.

FAQs

How many faults should I track?

Three at a time maximum. New faults queue behind; fixed faults graduate off. Narrow focus compounds; broad focus diffuses.

When is grammar “good enough”?

When timed letters show zero repeated faults across three consecutive mocks. New occasional slips are normal; repeats are the target.

What is in the course?

Clinical grammar repair activities, sentence-accuracy practice and final review tasks, with 5 complete mock tests.
