Mixed-Tense Mastery: Answer Keys and Clinical Vignettes for OET Referrals

Problem: single-tense drills pass, then real paragraphs mix history, today and plan — and writers freeze at every verb. Answer in brief: train tense-switching directly through mixed-tense exercises with answer keys, then clinical vignettes that force zone changes mid-paragraph. This guide teaches switching with a vignette drill, and OET Grammar — Course 5 provides mixed-tense exercises, keys and vignettes across 17 topic sections.

Switching is the skill

Exam paragraphs never sit in one tense: history sentences (past), status sentences (present), change sentences (perfect), plan sentences (future) alternate continuously. The tested skill is the switch — recognising each clause’s zone as you write it. Single-tense practice builds components; only mixed practice builds the assembly. Train switches from week one, not as an advanced extra.

Using answer keys properly

Keys diagnose, not teach: attempt first with zone marks, then compare verb by verb, logging each miss by type (zone error? form error? voice error?). A miss unexplained is a miss repeated — write the rule the key implies in your own words before moving on. Keys for exercises 3–15 in this course are designed for exactly this loop: attempt, compare, log, rewrite.

Clinical vignettes: zones under pressure

Two-line cases forcing three zones: “Admitted Tuesday with pneumonia (past); afebrile today with improving cough (present + perfect change); discharge planned Friday with GP follow-up (future).” Vignettes compress whole letters into zone-switching sprints — ten vignettes train more switching than ten gap-fills because every verb is chosen, not filled.

Worked vignette: fall with background

Fictional vignette, newly written: “Mrs Osei, 78, found on floor yesterday morning (past), no injury; background of two previous falls this year (past perfect territory: had fallen twice before this episode); alert and comfortable today (present); confidence has dropped markedly (perfect); falls-team review arranged Thursday (future arrangement).” Five zones, five verbs, zero hesitation — the switching reflex demonstrated.

FAQs

How many vignettes per session?

Eight to ten, timed at two minutes each, with immediate key comparison. Speed matters: switching must become reflex, and reflexes need pace.

What if my verb forms are wrong, not my zones?

Then drill forms separately (irregular pasts, perfect constructions) before returning to switching. Zone-first, form-second — but both, in that order.

What is in the course?

Seventeen topic sections of mixed-tense exercises with answer keys and clinical vignettes applied to referral letters, 16 lessons and 5 complete mock tests.
