PTE Writing Accuracy Trio: Tenses, Articles and Sentence Agreement

Problem: PTE writing loses enabling-skills marks to three fault families — wrong tenses, missing articles, broken agreement — that writers never isolate. Answer in brief: train each family as a focus block (tenses+passive, articles+prepositions, structure+agreement) with error logs per block, then combine. This guide teaches the trio with a fault-diagnosis drill, and PTE Grammar — Course 2 trains all three blocks across its topic sections.

Block 1: tenses and passive focus

Zone discipline plus passive placement, as previous courses — but PTE-compressed: summaries demand intra-sentence switches, essays demand profile discipline. Drill block 1 with one-sentence summaries (switches) and profile paragraphs (claim-evidence-implication). Log misses by switch-type, not by tense name.

Block 2: articles and prepositions focus

Articles: first-mention a/an, known the, generic zero (“Pollution harms health” vs “The pollution in Delhi…”). Prepositions: time (in/on/at), cause (due to, because of), trend (rise in, increase of, by 20%). PTE penalises small-word faults disproportionately in enabling scores — a dedicated block repays out of proportion to its glamour.

Block 3: sentence structure and agreement focus

Subject-verb agreement across distance (“The list of factors causes…” — list governs, not factors), singular/plural consistency, fragment and run-on repair, subordination for complexity. Long PTE sentences collapse agreement most — check verbs against subjects by stripping intervening phrases during review.

Fault-diagnosis drill (worked)

Fictional faulty paragraph, newly written: “Pollution in cities are rising. Government should take action. It have been shown that…” Diagnoses: agreement (“Pollution…are” — uncountable takes “is”); article (“Government” generic → “Governments” or “The government”); tense-voice (“have been” → “has been shown”). Three blocks, three faults, three fixes — diagnose by block, fix minimally, log by family.

FAQs

Which block first?

Tenses (biggest footprint), then agreement (structural), then articles-prepositions (finishing precision). Each block needs a week of isolated drills before combination.

How do blocks combine?

Mixed paragraphs with per-block fault logs: after writing, audit once per block (verbs, then small words, then structure). Three audits, three minutes, full coverage.

What is in the course?

Tenses-passive, articles-prepositions and structure-agreement focus blocks with PTE writing practice.
