Summarize Written Text Plus Write Essay: PTE Writing Practice Guide

Problem: candidates drill essays and neglect summaries — or compress summaries and waffle essays. Each task fails differently. Answer in brief: train summaries as compression (one sentence, all key points, correct form) and essays as argument (engine, development, 200–300 words), with full knowledge of what each measures. This guide teaches both tasks with a split routine, and PTE Writing — Course 5 practises summaries and essays across 9 topic sections.

Summarize Written Text: compression method

Read for key points (usually 3–4), draft one sentence joining them with correct connectors, check form (single sentence, word limit, capitalisation/punctuation). Common faults: two sentences, missed key points, copied strings too long. Practise method: summarise daily paragraphs from any reading — compression is a general skill the task merely tests.

Write Essay: argument recap

The 4-paragraph engine from earlier courses, assumed installed: position, two reasons, close, 200–300 words in 20 minutes. Essays fail on development depth — each reason needs example or detail, never bare assertion. Alternate summary and essay days so neither skill atrophies.

What PTE Academic tests: writer’s view

Writers should know the whole test’s shape — where writing tasks appear, which feed other scores, how enabling skills (grammar, vocabulary, spelling, fluency) reflect everywhere. Test knowledge turns preparation from blind drilling into targeted scoring: every practice choice justified by what it earns.

Split practice routine

Alternate days: summary days (5 compressions, timed) and essay days (1 timed essay plus log). Weekly: one mixed session under test conditions. 50/50 split until diagnostics show a lagging task; then 60/40 toward the laggard for two weeks, re-tested.
