  1. 1Choose the deadline
  2. 2Identify completion
  3. 3Check certainty

โ€œI will finish the draft on Fridayโ€ places an event in the future. โ€œBy Friday, I will have finished the draftโ€ looks back from a future point and presents the draft as complete by then.

The future-perfect section in Jobin Thomasโ€™s IELTS Writing Grammar Edge explains this completion viewpoint. This guide uses original study examples to practise the form and the difference between a deadline and a continuing period.

Identify the future point first

The reference point can be a time, a date or another future event: by six oโ€™clock, by next Friday, or by the time the session starts. Decide what you expect to be complete by that point.

โ€œBy the time the session starts, I will have reviewed the feedbackโ€ means the review is expected to be complete at or before the start. It does not specify exactly when the review begins.

Build the complete verb phrase

Use โ€œwill haveโ€ followed by a past participle: โ€œwill have finished,โ€ โ€œwill have writtenโ€ or โ€œwill have sent.โ€ Keep all three parts when using a main verb such as โ€œwrite.โ€

Original deadline practice

Positive: โ€œBy Friday, the learner will have completed the draft.โ€

Negative: โ€œThe learner will not have completed the draft by Friday.โ€

Question: โ€œWill the learner have completed the draft by Friday?โ€

The deadline remains the same, but the sentenceโ€™s claim changes. Check the negative as carefully as the verb form.

Distinguish by from until

โ€œI will finish the review by sixโ€ gives a latest completion time. โ€œI will work on the review until sixโ€ describes work continuing up to that time. The second sentence does not guarantee that the review will be finished.

This distinction matters when discussing a plan. Do not turn a period of work into a promised result unless that is what you mean.

Choose the expression that matches the meaning

1. The assignment must be complete no later than Monday: โ€œI will have finished it ___ Monday.โ€ (by/until)

2. The learner plans to keep practising up to eight oโ€™clock: โ€œI will practise ___ eight.โ€ (by/until)

Answers: 1 by โ€” a completion deadline. 2 until โ€” the end of a continuing activity.

Keep a prediction separate from a recorded fact

A grammatically complete sentence can still overstate certainty. If information is only a projection, describe it as projected or expected. Do not change โ€œis expected to finishโ€ into an unconditional guarantee merely to use a particular tense.

In a practice paragraph, first decide whether you are describing a personal plan, a prediction or supplied data. Choose wording that fits that status. The future perfect is an option for expressing completion, not a requirement to predict an outcome.

Choose the simpler form when it expresses the same point

โ€œI will finish by Fridayโ€ may be sufficient in many contexts. Use the future perfect when the viewpoint of looking back from the future helps your message. Adding a more complex form does not automatically improve the sentence.

For practice, write two deadlines and one continuing activity. Explain which uses โ€œbyโ€ and which uses โ€œuntil,โ€ then check whether the wording promises completion or only describes a plan.
