โ€œI worked there for two yearsโ€ and โ€œI have worked there for two yearsโ€ can both be correct. They do not normally communicate the same situation. Before choosing a tense, decide whether you are describing a finished period or a situation continuing up to now.

Jobin Thomasโ€™s IELTS Grammar Framework for High Performance explains these forms through rules, sentence exercises and short writing tasks. This guide focuses on its past simple and present perfect sections, with new examples that help you choose a form because of its meaning.

Start with the time you mean

The past simple commonly describes events in a finished past period: โ€œI completed the course last month.โ€ The phrase โ€œlast monthโ€ locates that completion in the past. The present perfect connects a past event or situation with now: โ€œI have completed the course, so I can start the next module.โ€

A time expression is useful evidence, but it should not become a mechanical rule that replaces understanding. You can use the past simple without writing a date when the past setting is already understood. Likewise, โ€œfor two yearsโ€ can describe either a finished period or one continuing now.

Original meaning comparison

Finished situation: โ€œI worked at the library for two years before moving to another town.โ€

Situation continuing now: โ€œI have worked at the library for two years, and I still enjoy the role.โ€

Notice: The duration stays the same. The relationship between the work and the present changes.

Separate experience from a particular occasion

โ€œI have visited Edinburghโ€ presents an experience without locating the visit in a finished past period. โ€œI visited Edinburgh last winterโ€ tells us about a particular occasion. A response can move naturally between the two: โ€œI have visited Edinburgh twice. On my last visit, I stayed with a friend.โ€

This change of tense is purposeful. The first sentence introduces experience up to now; the second describes one past visit. Keeping every verb in the same tense would not necessarily make the response clearer or more accurate.

Check the form after deciding the meaning

The present perfect uses have or has + past participle. Compare โ€œI wrote a paragraph yesterdayโ€ with โ€œI have written three paragraphs so far.โ€ With irregular verbs, the past form and participle can differ: wrote/written, went/gone and saw/seen.

For past simple questions and negatives with most verbs, use did + base form: โ€œDid you finish?โ€ and โ€œI did not finish.โ€ Avoid adding the past ending again after โ€œdid.โ€ The verb โ€œbeโ€ works differently: โ€œWere you ready?โ€

Choose the forms, then check your reasoning

1. I ___ (join) the class last Tuesday.

2. I ___ (know) my study partner since 2022, and we still practise together.

3. I ___ (write) two practice essays so far this week.

4. Did you ___ (send) your draft yesterday?

Answers: 1 joined: a finished past occasion. 2 have known: the relationship continues now. 3 have written: a total over the current period up to now. 4 send: the base form follows โ€œdid.โ€

Do not let โ€œsinceโ€ hide the timeline

โ€œSinceโ€ introduces a starting point; โ€œforโ€ introduces a duration. โ€œI have lived here since 2021โ€ and โ€œI have lived here for several yearsโ€ can describe the same continuing situation. If the situation has ended, give that context and choose a suitable past form.

In a description of data, look at the period actually shown. A chart covering only a finished historical period does not justify a present perfect claim simply because the numbers show an increase. โ€œSales rose between 2010 and 2015โ€ keeps the statement within those dates.

Practise with a short account of your learning

Write three connected sentences: one about an experience up to now, one about a specific past occasion, and one about something continuing. For example: โ€œI have tried several study routines. Last month, I began keeping a vocabulary notebook. I have used it regularly since then.โ€

A useful editing question

For each verb, ask: what time does this describe, and is that meaning clear from the surrounding sentences? Correct the timeline before trying to add a wider range of forms.
