Questions about cities can tempt you to make statements about millions of people. A more careful answer identifies a specific issue and explains how it may affect a particular group.

The city-life discussion in Speak Smart: The Complete IELTS Speaking Preparation Toolkit raises transport, costs and access. This guide develops the language of a measured explanation without treating every city as identical.

Choose a point you can explain

Instead of listing traffic, housing, noise and isolation in one breath, develop one relevant concern. If the question asks about commuting, explain how a long journey might affect a worker's schedule.

Original discussion response

“One challenge can be the distance between affordable housing and workplaces. Someone who lives far from their job may spend a considerable part of the day travelling, although this varies with local transport and where they live.”

Keep possibility separate from certainty

“Can,” “may” and “in some areas” are useful when you do not have evidence for a universal statement. They should match your meaning rather than appear as empty decoration.

Qualify the claim

Draft: “Nobody in a city has time for hobbies.”

Revision: “Long working hours and commuting can leave some city residents with less time for hobbies.”

The revision identifies possible causes and avoids claiming to know every resident's experience.

Connect a solution to the problem

If you suggest improved transport, explain how it addresses the commuting issue. A new cultural festival may be valuable, but it does not directly solve the problem you have described.

During practice, circle absolute words in your notes. Keep them only when you can justify them. You can express a clear opinion while acknowledging differences between people and places.
