  1. 1State your view

  3. 3Add a useful qualification

“I think online learning is useful” expresses an opinion, but it leaves the listener wondering why. A developed response explains the connection between your view and the situation you are discussing.

The discussion and linking-language sections in Jobin Thomas’s IELTS Speaking Success: High-Quality Practice Tests and Perfect Model Responses explore reasons, examples and contrasting ideas. This guide uses them as practice tools, not a compulsory script for every answer.

Answer the actual question first

Listen for the focus. A question about why people choose online study needs reasons for that choice. A question about whether it suits everyone requires you to consider differences between learners.

Starting with a relevant position helps you organise what follows. You can say that something depends on circumstances, but identify those circumstances rather than leaving the answer at “it depends.”

Original discussion example

Practice question: Why might people with changing work hours prefer flexible lessons?

Possible response: “I think the main advantage is that they can arrange learning around their work. Someone whose shifts change each week may struggle to attend a fixed evening class. Flexible appointments could help, although they would still need to agree available times with a tutor.”

The answer gives a reason, illustrates it and recognises a practical limit. It does not claim that every learner has the same needs.

Explain the mechanism behind your reason

“It is convenient” is a useful starting point, but ask what makes it convenient. Does it reduce travel, allow a different appointment or provide access from another location? Choose the explanation that fits your question.

A concrete mechanism makes the idea easier to follow. It also reduces the temptation to repeat the same opinion in several slightly different sentences.

Use an example that supports the point

An example should show the reason at work. If your point concerns scheduling, describe a scheduling situation. A story about an attractive classroom may be interesting but does not establish the benefit you are discussing.

You can introduce a hypothetical situation as hypothetical: “Someone who works rotating shifts might…” Avoid inventing survey results or percentages to make an ordinary explanation sound authoritative.

Develop a short opinion

Starting point: “Small study groups can be useful.”

Practice task: Add a reason, an example and one reasonable limitation.

Possible development: “Small groups can give learners more chances to contribute. In a discussion with three people, each person may have more speaking time than in a large class. However, that depends on how the session is organised and whether everyone participates.”

This is one possible response, not a fixed answer to memorise. Other well-explained views can also be relevant.

Choose connectors for the relationship

“Because” introduces a reason; “for example” introduces an illustration; “although” can introduce a qualification. Use the relationship you need rather than inserting a formal connector into every sentence.

Read your response aloud. If “moreover” or “in conclusion” feels forced in a short conversational answer, try a simpler connection or let the sequence of ideas do the work.

Review one recording for relevance

Ask whether each sentence answers the question or supports something that does. Remove an unrelated detail, then practise again with fresh wording. You are developing an explanation, not trying to remember a perfect paragraph.
