You begin answering a question about a favourite activity, then find yourself describing someone else's holiday. A small detour can become a long answer that no longer serves the original question.
The common-mistakes section in IELTS Speaking Academic Success Book identifies drifting off topic as a practice concern. This guide focuses on a simple recovery method rather than a fixed phrase to memorise.
Keep the question's main job in mind
If asked why you enjoy cooking, your answer needs a reason for that enjoyment. Details about when you cook or who taught you can support the reason, but they should not replace it.
Original recovery example
“My brother showed me that recipe before he moved away… The reason I still enjoy making it is that I can adapt it with whatever ingredients I have.”
The speaker reconnects the family detail to the enjoyment of cooking.
Reconnect instead of starting again
A brief link can bring the answer back. You do not need a lengthy apology or a complete restart. Identify the relevant idea and continue from it.
Find the useful connection
Question: Why do you like reading?
Tangent: A description of the bookshop's location.
Possible return: “What I enjoy most, though, is finding a story that lets me see an unfamiliar situation from another person's perspective.”
This restores the focus on the speaker's reason for reading.
Review relevance, not just length
After recording, label each sentence as a direct answer, supporting detail or unrelated detail. Remove one unnecessary part and try again with fresh wording.
A response does not become useful merely by becoming longer. Aim for enough relevant development to explain your point, and listen to the next question rather than trying to deliver every prepared idea.
