  1. 1Compare the two dates
  2. 2Separate action from intention
  3. 3Write a balanced update

A progress letter should show what has changed. It should also preserve the difference between an achieved change and an intention for the future.

The first case in Letters That Score: OET Writing for Dietitians includes an initial consultation, a review and a future plan. This guide studies those time relationships without offering dietary advice.

Compare the relevant points

Place the earlier and review information side by side. Identify which details show a change and which provide context for that change.

Original study notes

Earlier: No regular writing practice.

Review: Completed two paragraph exercises.

Plan: Intends to attempt a full letter next week.

Update: “The learner has completed two paragraph exercises and plans to attempt a full letter next week.”

Preserve reported information

If a change is described by the person rather than directly observed, an attribution such as “reports” can keep that distinction clear when relevant. Do not turn a subjective report into an independently verified result.

Find the overstatement

“The learner has completed a full letter” is unsupported by the notes. The full letter remains a plan; only the paragraph exercises are recorded as completed.

Include remaining needs

A progress update can recognise improvement while explaining what still needs attention. Avoid selecting only positive details if the recipient needs the remaining concern to understand the next step.

Practise a short update from two dated note sets, then check every achievement against the review evidence.
