โ€œWhere is the reception desk?โ€ is a direct question. Add a polite opening and the word order changes: โ€œCould you tell me where the reception desk is?โ€ Keeping the direct-question order inside the longer question is a common source of errors.

The question-formation chapter in Jobin Thomasโ€™s Precision Grammar for OET Doctors explains direct and indirect forms. This guide concentrates on the embedded question: the part after โ€œCould you tell meโ€ฆโ€ or a similar opening. The examples practise communication rather than clinical decisions.

Find the two parts of the question

In โ€œCould you tell me where the reception desk is?โ€, the opening request is โ€œCould you tell me.โ€ The information you want appears in โ€œwhere the reception desk is.โ€ That second part uses subjectโ€“verb order.

Compare โ€œWhen does the appointment start?โ€ with โ€œCould you tell me when the appointment starts?โ€ The embedded clause does not keep โ€œdoes,โ€ and the main verb takes its appropriate form: โ€œstarts.โ€

Original question practice

Direct: Where do you usually collect the forms?

Indirect: Could you tell me where you usually collect the forms?

Direct: When did the letter arrive?

Indirect: Could you tell me when the letter arrived?

When โ€œdoโ€ or โ€œdidโ€ disappears from the embedded question, check the verb again. The past meaning remains in โ€œarrived.โ€

Use if or whether for a yes/no question

A direct yes/no question does not contain a question word such as โ€œwhere.โ€ An indirect version can introduce the information with โ€œifโ€ or โ€œwhetherโ€: โ€œIs the office open?โ€ becomes โ€œCould you tell me whether the office is open?โ€

The embedded clause again uses statement order: โ€œthe office is,โ€ not โ€œis the office.โ€ Check this especially when the direct form feels familiar and comes to mind automatically.

Correct these indirect questions

1. Could you tell me where is the entrance?

2. Do you know when did the message arrive?

3. Could you confirm whether are the forms ready?

Answers: 1 Could you tell me where the entrance is? 2 Do you know when the message arrived? 3 Could you confirm whether the forms are ready?

Keep the question easy to follow

A longer opening is not automatically more courteous or more useful. โ€œCould you tell meโ€ฆโ€ is often enough. Several layers of polite wording can make the actual question difficult to find.

Direct questions can also be appropriate. Choose a form that fits what you need to ask, and speak at a pace that allows the other person to respond. Practising indirect questions expands your options; it does not mean every question needs an indirect form.

Practise one change at a time

Write three direct questions about appointments or paperwork. Convert them into indirect questions and underline the subjectโ€“verb order in each embedded clause. Then record yourself asking them without reading the completed version.

Listen for a specific pattern: did you repeat the original question order after the opening? If so, practise that one sentence slowly, then use the same structure with a different question. This checks whether you can apply the pattern beyond a memorised example.
