Check names, dates and recipient details against the task instead of completing them from a familiar template.

  1. 1Locate the given detail
  2. 2Preserve it accurately
  3. 3Leave assumptions out

A realistic-looking date or name can still be wrong if the task never supplied it. Templates should organise information, not generate facts.

The first case-and-model set in OET Writing Medicine Unveiled offers a useful opportunity to compare identification details with the notes. This guide focuses on that final accuracy check.

Separate known details from empty template fields

If the notes provide an age but no date of birth, the age does not identify an exact birthday. Likewise, a department name does not supply the name of an individual recipient.

Original administrative example

Given: Alex Morgan, aged 34; letter to the course office.

Unsupported additions: A specific birthday and an invented office manager's name.

Use the information actually supplied rather than filling those gaps by guesswork.

Check copied template material

Old names, addresses and dates can survive in a new draft. Review the opening, reference line and closing for details that belong to a previous task.

Find the unsupported inference

Knowing someone is 34 in a particular year does not establish their exact date of birth. Do not calculate and invent a complete date from that information.

Use a separate identification pass

After reviewing the body, compare each identifying detail with the task. This short pass has a different purpose from checking grammar.

Practise with two fictional task sheets and one reusable layout. Check that all details in the second draft come from the second task. Accuracy matters more than making every template field look full.
