Start with the skill you want to improve
An explanation can be accurate and still miss what the patient wants to know. Use this routine to make an independent role-play practice session more responsive.
Read the situation and write down the patient’s likely question. Then practise an opening that invites their perspective: “What is worrying you most about this?” Follow the answer with one focused question. If the patient is worried about managing a routine at work, a long definition of the condition will not resolve that concern.
