Teaching extract: 1.1 Present Simple Tense

Usage: The present simple describes facts, habits, routines, general truths, and permanent situations. In a nursing context, use present simple to talk about routine duties, general health facts, or habitual actions. It is also used in writing patient backgrounds (e.g. "Mr. Lee has diabetes.").

  • We use the base form of the verb for subjects I/you/we/they and add -s or -es for third person singular subjects (he/she/it).
  • For negatives, use do/does + not + base verb (e.g. "She does not smoke.").
  • For questions, use Do/Does at the beginning (e.g. "Does the patient have any allergies?").

Common time expressions: usually, always, often, every (day/week), in general, sometimes, never. These words often accompany present simple to indicate routine or frequency, e.g. "I usually start my shift at 7 AM."

Exercise 1.1: Present Simple Practice — first three questions

Complete the sentences with the correct present simple form of the verbs in brackets. Remember to add -s or -es for third person singular subjects (he, she, it).

  1. Nurse Silva ___ (check) the patients' blood pressure every morning.
  2. Our clinic ___ (offer) free health check-ups every Saturday.
  3. I ___ (work) in the Paediatrics ward.

Extract ends here. Further questions and the answer key are in the book.

Your four-week nursing grammar study plan

Turn short grammar practice into clearer nursing letters. Start with the free sample above or a practice task you already have; owning the book is optional. If you use this workbook, its tense, passive-voice and letter sections support the activities below.

A manageable rhythm: choose three 20-minute sessions each week: learn one point, use it, then review it. These are suggested study times, not exam timings. Repeat a week when you need more practice.

  1. Week 1 — make time clear. Write five sentences about an invented nurse’s routine and five about a completed shift. Underline each verb and its time clue. Review the tense explanation, correct your sentences and explain two changes in your own words. Keep your first attempt.
  2. Week 2 — choose active or passive deliberately. Rewrite five invented sentences in both forms. Check the form of be and the past participle, then choose the version that makes the actor or action clearest. For example: “The nurse checked the form” / “The form was checked by the nurse.” Do not change the meaning merely to use the passive.
  3. Week 3 — connect sentences into a paragraph. Use a fictional practice task to write a short nursing-letter paragraph. Check the reader and purpose, group related facts, and make the sequence of events clear. Review only tenses and sentence structure on your first editing pass; then check that every statement matches the notes.
  4. Week 4 — check transfer to new work. Revisit your Week 1 sentences without looking at the corrections. Then write a fresh paragraph from different practice notes. Compare the same features: tense choice, subject–verb agreement and passive formation. Choose the most frequent remaining error for your next week.

Try a two-minute check now

Complete these original practice sentences: “She ___ (check) the timetable every morning.” “Yesterday, the timetable ___ (check) by the coordinator.”

Check the answers and reasoning

checks: a present routine with a third-person singular subject. was checked: a completed past action expressed in the passive. Write one new example of each without copying these sentences.

Only ten minutes between commitments?

Spend two minutes recalling one rule, five minutes correcting three sentences, and three minutes writing your reason and next practice date. After a missed session, continue with the next activity; there is no need to double the workload.

Copy your weekly progress record
  • Date and task:
  • First attempt saved:
  • Two corrections and why:
  • One new sentence using the same point:
  • One error to practise next:
  • Next session:

Compare similar-length attempts. Fewer errors on a repeated exercise alone may reflect memory; check the same skill in fresh writing too. This record is a learning aid, not an OET score.

Free next step: choose a nursing task from OET’s official sample tests and consult the official Writing preparation guidance. This focused grammar routine is one part of preparation, not a complete four-skill programme.
