Practise Patient-Friendly Explanations

Convert complex medical terms into everyday language without losing accuracy.

Develop Empathy in Communication

Use polite, reassuring sentences such as:

“I understand your concern…”

“Let me explain what this means for you.”

Structure Your Interaction

Follow a logical flow: greeting → clarifying concerns → providing explanations → outlining next steps.

Record and Reflect

Record your role-play practices, check tone, clarity, and pacing, and seek feedback from peers or trainers.

Doctor’s Role Card

Brief Situation: You are a GP in a suburban clinic. A 45-year-old male patient presents with frequent urination, excessive thirst, and fatigue. He is worried these might be signs of diabetes.

First task: Ask about the patient’s symptoms (onset, any weight changes, etc.) and lifestyle habits.

Extract ends here. This is the opening of a language-practice role-play; the remaining tasks and patient role card are in the book.

Your four-week doctors’ speaking study plan

Build a repeatable habit of speaking, listening back and trying again. You can begin with the free extract above and official Medicine sample tasks; the book is optional. Its paired role cards and reflection prompts can provide further practice.

A manageable rhythm: schedule three 20-minute sessions each week: prepare and speak, listen and improve, then try a fresh task. These are suggested study sessions, not exam timings. Use fictional role cards rather than real patient details.

  1. Week 1 — establish a starting point. Choose one Medicine role card. Identify the setting, the patient’s concern and your tasks. Rehearse aloud with a partner if available, or record your own practice. Listen back and note one clear moment and one point where your meaning was hard to follow. Keep this first attempt.
  2. Week 2 — explain in everyday language. Choose three expressions from a practice card and explain them in plain English without changing their meaning. Say each explanation aloud, pause, and practise a question that invites the listener to explain what they understood. Ask a partner what remained unclear; revise that part.
  3. Week 3 — respond to the person. Practise asking an open question, listening to the response and acknowledging a specific concern before continuing. With a partner, repeat the scenario with a different fictional concern. Working alone? Practise two possible responses, then arrange interactive practice when you can.
  4. Week 4 — use the skill on a new card. Try an unfamiliar Medicine sample task using its published instructions. Compare it with your first recording: are explanations clearer, are pauses useful, and do your replies respond to what the patient actually says? Pick one remaining difficulty and repeat that part before choosing another card.

Try a short conversation opening now

A fictional patient says, “I’m worried I won’t understand the appointment letter.” Say one response that acknowledges the concern and one open question. Pause to allow an answer.

See one possible response

“It sounds as though the letter is worrying you. Which part would you like us to go through first?” This is an original language-practice example, not a script to memorise. Adapt your next words to the answer.

Only ten minutes today?

Spend two minutes choosing one communication goal, three minutes speaking, three minutes listening back and two minutes repeating the least clear part. If your rota changes, move the next session rather than abandoning the week.

Copy your weekly progress record
  • Date and role card:
  • One communication goal:
  • Recording moment that worked:
  • Moment to improve and the revised wording:
  • Feedback from a partner, if available:
  • Fresh task and next session:

Use this to notice changes, not to award yourself a test grade. Independent feedback can help identify problems you miss when listening to yourself.

Free next step: use official OET sample tests and the official Speaking preparation guidance. This is an original speaking practice routine; adjust it to your starting point and preparation needs.
