A new diagnosis, a familiar family routine
Preparation: 3 minutes. Role-play: about 5 minutes.
Setting: General practice โ diabetes education appointment.
Nurse: You are a practice nurse speaking with a 46-year-old patient recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The patient has started the treatment prescribed by the GP and has come for education. They prepare meals for a large household and are worried that managing diabetes will require a completely separate lifestyle from their family.
- Find out what the patient understands about the diagnosis and which change worries them most.
- Explain the purpose of the prescribed treatment and ongoing monitoring in language the patient can understand.
- Explore the family food routine and discuss manageable changes suited to the patient’s circumstances.
- Discuss the importance of the planned checks and follow-up, addressing the patient’s concerns.
- Agree a realistic first step and check the patient’s understanding of the plan.
This is a language-practice scenario, not personal medical advice.
